Windows Components: Wings

This document describes installing the actual Wings software onto your Windows PC and Server.


In some of the ASNA Wings installation steps, you will need to download software from ASNA's Developer Network site (at http://devnet.asna.com). Downloading software from ASNA requires a user account; so if you do not yet have an account, please create one now and sign in to the site with it. Doing this now makes some of the following steps easier.

Creating an ASNA Account

To create an account, point your browser to http://devnet.asna.com and click the "Sign In" link in the top right-hand corner of the page. The next page shows a "Create an Account" link on the left. Click that link and follow the directions. You will be signed in after creating your account.

The next steps explain how to install Wings for the modernization environment and for the runtime production environment. For initial work with Wings, you will only need to the Modernization Environment. You'll need the Production Environment to deploy a Wings application and make it available to your users.

Install the Wings Modernization Environment

On each PC on which you will do ASNA Wings modernization work

Note: — To install the PC components be sure you are logged into the PC as an administrator.

1. Install Visual Studio 2019

Install Visual Studio per Microsoft's installation instructions. This installation takes several minutes so be patient.

2. Install ASNA Wings 10.0

Install ASNA Wings 10.0 (WDA) following the instructions and requirements noted here. Be sure to follow the instructions for licensing WDA.

This will install all of the components required to develop Wings applications, including the Monarch Framework.

On the Windows Web Server

  1. Internet Information Server (IIS) – This is the HTTP server that comes with Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012, including .NET Framework 4.5.
  2. ASNA DataGate Webpak - This provides ASNA Wings the runtime access to the IBM i, it can be downloaded from devnet.asna.com and installed following the internal instructions.
