Installing Wings on the IBM i

This topic offers an overview of installing Wings components onto the IBM i.

Installation Prerequisites on the IBM i

Modernization Environment

Software requirements on the IBM i:

  • IBM i V6R1 or higher (including V7R2)
  • IBM Open Access RPG Edition (licensed program 5733), free since 2012
  • ASNA DataGate for IBM i – This provides access to the IBM i for reading display file and message file definitions.
  • ASNA Monarch Collector – This provides some lower level services to ASNA Wings for reading display file and message file definitions.

Poduction Runtime environment

Software requirements for the IBM i. Note that if this is the same IBM i you used to perform ASNA Wings modernization, it already has the software installed for runtime production. These requirements are:

Note that for runtime production work only, the IBM i does not need the ASNA Monarch Collector. That is only for modernization.

On the IBM i used for Wings modernization work

1. Confirm OS/400 version
Use the WRKLICINF IBM i command to confirm the IBM i is at V6R1 or higher. If not, you will need to upgrade to V6R1 or higher before continuing.

2. Install IBM's Rational Open Access RPG Edition

Acquire IBM's Rational Open Access RPG Edition and install it according to the instructions that IBM provides here.

3. Install ASNA DataGate for IBM i

Be sure to have signed into the ASNA's Developer Network site before using the links referenced here. Download ASNA DataGate 12.0 for IBM i here. Follow the installation instructions on that page or view them here. Be sure to follow the instructions for licensing DataGate for IBM i. If you need a license code, please contact ASNA technical support at 800-289-2762 or 210-408-0212, email us at support@asna.com, or contact your ASNA sales representative.

During the installation of DataGate for IBM i, you will enter a TCP/IP port number. Make a note of that value. You will need it later.

4. Install ASNA Monarch Collector

Be sure to have signed in to the ASNA's Developer Network site before using the links referenced here. Download the latest ASNA Monarch Collector here.

Follow the installation instructions on that page or view them here. Be sure to follow the instructions for licensing Monarch Collector that are also on that page.

On the IBM i

Note that if this is the same IBM i you used to perform ASNA Wings modernization, it already has the software installed for runtime production. Otherwise the following are needed.

  1. IBM i V6R1 or higher
  2. IBM Open Access RPG Edition (licensed program 5733), free and included since V7R1.
  3. ASNA DataGate for IBM i – This provides access to the IBM i for reading display file and message file definitions.

Note that for runtime production work only, the IBM i does not need the ASNA Monarch Collector. That is needed only for the modernization environment.
